The maintenance of the canoe is an important factor when looking at new or used canoes for sale. Are you someone who likes to get down and dirty in the workshop or are you someone who puts things away and only looks at them then next time they are needed. I am the latter which is why I have a canoe that is made from very tough materials. There are so many different type of canoes for sale that it can be hard to find just what you are looking for.
If you are someone who likes the more traditional wooden or canvas canoes then you will have to maintain or have someone else maintain the canoe yearly. I must say there is part of me that pines for a wooden canoe because they look so beautiful but I would not have to time to give them the care and attention the deserve. So fo those of you who just want to put the canoe away and the end of the day and forget it then what is the best type of canoes for sale on the market.
Well the obvious material here is Aluminium. It is very tough so you do not have to worry too much about bumps and scratches. If there is a bump and you access ot the inside then you can hammer the bump out. This is not always the case but is possible to get rid of the majority of a big bump.
Fibreglass will scratch but the outside resins can be repaired and also holes can be repaired and smoothed over. This all required an bit of skill but is perfectly possible. Kevlar is the daddy of canoe materials being the strongest and the lightest but it is not immune to damage. It is very expensive and repair can be expensive so this may not be the material for you.
ABS or Royalex as it is known in the business will stand up to the most rugged use. It is heavier than Fibreglass and Kevlar but much more resilient to impact and scratches. It is however hard to repair so it may be better to consult and expert or your local canoe shop.
Polyethylene is the low cost canoe option. There are many canoes for sale manufactured in this way every year due to the simple manufacturing technique. It is not as rigid as ABS as the canoe may deform in shape when in the water. This is more of a material for messing around on a lake and may not be the material for choice for canoeing down rivers. They can not really be beaten on price and is a good option for the occasional canoeist as this material will take quite a beating.
Whatever material of canoes for sale you choose just make sure you wear the correct safety gear and have lots of fun.
